11:00am-12:00nn (HKT/GMT+8) - Selected Topical Lectures & Programme Consultations
Description: This talk will explore how Northeast Asian cities Tokyo, Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul, and Hong Kong and Southeast Asian cities Bangkok, Jakarta, Manila, Ho Chi Minh City, and Singapore are contrasted in Hollywood, Japanese, Korean, and Hong Kong cinema. The analysis will cover different instalments from the Marvel Universe, Transformers, James Bond, Mission Impossible, Pacific Rim, Westworld, Train to Busan, and Ghost in the Shell franchises. While the global cities of so-called ‘advanced industrialised’ Northeast Asia are envisioned as models of prosperity, order, and progress, the megalopolises of ‘developing’ or ‘emerging’ Southeast Asia are denigrated as zones of poverty, criminality, and violence.
