The International Conference on Oriental Management Culture

Call for Papers

Contemporary management studies are dominated by academic research in Western management, which cites many important research theories and successful cases of practice for reference by contemporary academia and the business world. Comparatively, management studies related to Eastern culture are somewhat limited at this stage. Eastern culture has a long history, and over the past 2000 years, it has originated from ancient Chinese Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism, and Indian Brahmanism, influencing and shaping the thoughts and cultures of many countries and regions such as Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, etc. We all know that the diversity and innovation of Eastern management culture are important methods to reduce the dehumanization of capital and develop sustainable business operations. How Eastern culture responds to the development of modern enterprises and organizations is worth continuous exploration and practice. We hope to conduct research and review summaries on business management activities influenced by Eastern culture and related theories.

The International Conference on Oriental Management Culture is jointly initiated by the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the EMBA (Chinese) Program of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Department of Economic History of Peking University, Research Center for Corporate Social Responsibility of South China University of Technology, and the Fo Guang Shan Institute of Humanistic Buddhism. It is scheduled to be held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong on November 22 and 23, 2024.

The call for papers is now open, and we cordially invite scholars and experts from academic, religious, and business communities to submit their research contributions.

On February 5, 2023, Master Hsing Yun, the founder of Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan and the Buddha’s Light International Association, passed away peacefully. Master Hsing Yun dedicated his life to the promotion of Humanistic Buddhism, actively promoting exchanges between Buddhists in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau. He established over 300 temples and five universities worldwide, spreading and promoting Humanistic Buddhism. His contributions have earned him the admiration and respect of Chinese communities both domestical and abroad, as well as of people around the world.

On March 5, 2023, the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Buddhist Research Center of Peking University and Institute for Studies of Buddhism and Religious Theory at Renmin University of China, jointly held a colloquium titled “In Praise and Memory of Master Hsing Yun: A Global Buddhist Scholars Remembrance Forum”. The event expressed reminiscences of Master Hsing Yun and contemplated on the Humanistic Buddhism that he pioneered, receiving a broad response.

On the occasion of the first anniversary of Master Hsing Yun’s passing, these three academic institutions plan to hold a commemorative event titled “Anniversary Commemoration of Master Hsing Yun’s Nirvana: Global Conference of Buddhist Scholars on Humanistic Buddhism”. It will take place January 19-20, 2024, at the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Master Hsing Yun advocated the use of culture to promote Buddhism, education to cultivate talent, charity to benefit society, and communal practice to purify the mind. Holding an academic colloquium to continue the development of this pedagogy on the first anniversary of his passing is the most fitting way to commemorate him.
