This course will provide a survey of artistic practices engaging with advanced technologies including AR/VR/XR, AI, 3D printing, blockchain, motion capture, software art, physical computing, robotics, and the unique considerations for curating and programming these art forms. Through discussions into key concepts in art history and media theory, students will gain a deeper understanding of technology as it intersects with art, culture and society. The course will be complemented with hands-on workshops with industry professionals to get real-world insight into designing and developing a virtual exhibition. Students will have the chance to conceptualise and develop a curatorial project through events, public programmes and exhibitions, and explore digital and physical forms of engagement. The course will include studio visits with artists, field trips and guest speakers, where possible, and involve individual and group projects, presentations, and written assignments.

Course instructor: Prof Ashley Lee Wong

Ashley Lee Wong is Assistant Professor of Cultural Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She is Co-Founder and Artistic Director, MetaObjects, a studio that facilitates digital projects with artists and cultural institutions, and has worked as Head of Programmes of Sedition, an online platform for distributing digital limited editions by contemporary artists based in London, UK. She manages the Research Network for Philosophy and Technology and Technophany Journal. Her research bridges theory and practice to ways of thinking and engaging in contemporary cultural economies for artists and practitioners working with art and technology. Her work has been published in academic journals including DATA browser, Curating Superintelligences, 2024; Screened Bodies, The Journal of Embodiment, Media Arts, and Technology, Vol 7. Iss. 1, 2022; Visual Culture Studies Journal Iss.3-4, 2022. She is working on a monograph published by The MIT Press.
