Why did you choose Philosophy at CUHK Faculty of Arts? What did you enjoy most at CUHK?
Since the Department of Philosophy of CUHK is the best philosophy department in Hong Kong, I had no hesitation to choose it as my first priority when I submitted the JUPAS form. During my time at CUHK, which last for more than 12 years, apart from the well-known admirable scenery, I enjoyed most the peacefulness that brought to me by the simple lifestyle and academic atmosphere there.
What is your current role? How your philosophy education prepared you for your career?
I have been studying philosophy for more than 25 years and it has never stopped bringing me new points of view and reflections to understand myself and the world, which nothing are comparable. I, being a lawyer equipped with philosophical thinking and knowledge, not only can firmly grasp the foundation and rationale of laws easily but also analyse the cases in a thorough and logical manner. I have never treated philosophy as a career, it is indeed a life-long learning and studying process, therefore I intended to establish a career in another field and eventually found that the practice of law is suitable for me much as the rationale behind different principles in law is extremely philosophical. Needless to say, I also obtained my law degree from CUHK.
From your experience, what has been the value of having an Arts degree? What advice would you give to our current students?
Taking professional career path aside, reading an Arts degree (in particular philosophy, if I may say so) will definitely broaden your horizon and enrich your life with meanings. Whether we are talent or not is out of our control, but whether to work hard or not is wholly our own decision to make, therefore, if you are fortunate enough to have a chance studying at CUHK, just try your best and you won’t regret it.
