This lecture attempts to explore how Nishida Kitaro’s concept of self-consciousness was formed. Nishida advocates that the two aspects of self-consciousness are intuition and reflection. This means that self-consciousness serves as the foundation for the activity of both intuition and reflection. It also means that intuition and reflection are two facets of the self-activity of self-consciousness. Nishida further characterizes self-consciousness as an absolute free will. This absolute free will becomes a key framework in the lecture’s exploration of the formation process of self-consciousness.
