The Faculty of Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) congratulates Professor James Frankel from the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies and Professor Hayden Kee from the Department of Philosophy for receiving the SCGE Exemplary Teaching Award in General Education 2023.
Sharing from Professor James Frankel, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies: “World Religions” is the kind of course where I can help students grasp big ideas, including reflection on what it means to be human. I try to foster them to transform information into knowledge, and knowledge into wisdom, as they embark on their lives beyond the university. My job is not to merely instill ideas, but to facilitate students’ own discovery of truth, bringing their moral and intellectual instincts to the conscious fore. Nothing compares for me with the experience of witnessing young minds expand. Helping to bring students to a better understanding of themselves and inculcating within them a love of learning, with the proviso that they must be active participants in the process, is the heart of my work and the joy of my heart. Knowing that they have shared my delight in taking this educational journey with them brings me the utmost satisfaction in my profession. Receiving this award is an indication that my colleagues and the university at large also appreciate my efforts. This affirmation of my labor of love is especially gratifying.
Sharing from Professor Hayden Kee, Department of Philosophy: Teaching philosophy is one of the great challenges and joys of my life. When teaching in General Education at CUHK I try to find the intersection of my interests and knowledge, students’ interests and questions, and the world we're living in. That’s where meaningful inquiry can spark. I’m grateful to have the freedom and flexibility to teach in this way in UGE, and I’m grateful to my students for their enthusiasm and willingness to take intellectual risks.
