Organised by the Faculty of Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK Arts), and co-organised by the CUHK Art Museum and the Department of Fine Arts, the public lecture “Liu Xiaodong: Painting in Action” as part of the CUHK Artist-in-Residence Programme 2024 was successfully held on Friday, November 22, 2024. The event attracted over 150 attendees from CUHK and the public, who gathered to learn from the world-renowned contemporary artist and oil painter, Professor Liu Xiaodong.
Professor Max Tang, Chair of the Artist-in-Residence Programme Committee and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, opened the lecture by introducing the Artist-in-Residence Programme and expressing gratitude to Professor Liu Xiaodong for serving as this year's artist-in-residence. He highlighted Professor Liu's artistic achievements and his profound impact on contemporary Chinese and global art.
Professor Liu Xiaodong graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 1988 and began teaching there in the early 1990s. Since the late 1980s, he has embarked on a vibrant artistic journey. With his easel and canvasses, he traveled around the world to carry out “painting on site”. “What he has created is rich and spectacular collection of paintings that is unique in its scale, and global resonances,” remarked Professor Tang. “To the best of my knowledge, we have never seen such a body of work in the history of oil painting.”
The lecture concluded with a lively Q&A session hosted by Professor Liu and Professor Tang. The enthusiastic participation from the audience highlighted a shared passion for art and strong support for the programme.
The CUHK Faculty of Arts extends its heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their support, which contributed to the success of this event. Meanwhile, the exhibition “Works by Liu Xiaodong” is being held on the CUHK campus from now until December 19. All are welcome.
