Among the ten successful projects led by CUHK research teams supported by the 2022/23 Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) by the Research Grants Council (RGC), Professor Lai Chi Tim and Professor Patrick Wong, from the Faculty of Arts, were awarded a total of about HK$12 million for their collaborative research projects.
Prof. Lai Chi Tim (Department of Cultural and Religious Studies) received a HK$4 million Collaborative Research Project Grant with the project titled Lingnan Culture and the World: Construction and Change in the Cultural Landscape of Cantonese Literati from the Late Qing to the Republican Era in China (1821-1949).
The project builds upon a fruitful collaborative pilot study on late Qing Cantonese literati, which confirms the need for a larger-scale endeavour and shows the great potential, pertinence and feasibility of its interdisciplinary and macroscopic approach.
Being elated and honored to be a recipient, Prof. Lai shared “The fact that a humanities project is selected for the grant is an encouraging sign that reaffirms the RGC’s interest in and support for a collaborative approach to humanities studies. As humanities is a vast and multifaceted domain, a well-rounded project calls for broader perspectives and interdisciplinary efforts that can break through the confines of individual disciplines.”
Prof. Patrick Wong Chun-man (Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages) received an HK8.3 million Collaborative Research Equipment Grant with his project named Hyperscanning to Explore the Human Mind in Ensemble.
The project aims to establish the fNIRS Hyperscanning Shared Facility (fHSF), which will be the first hyperscanning facility in Hong Kong for the study of human cognition in small groups. fHSF will enable local researchers and their collaborators to address next-generation questions about the human mind that go beyond one or two brains.
Prof. Wong has a strong team of Co-PIs consisting of members from four local universities who have collaborative experience ranging from publications, RGC collaborative research grants, to establishment of a core MRI facility, which was a contributing factor towards this successful application.
