Abstract:

What is engaged research? And to what extent can research be engaged?

In this talk Elena Nichini and Saba Asim will share and discuss their collaborative and interdisciplinary research in the field of health in Hong Kong. Two examples of engaged research will be introduced: first, a community-based participatory action research, exploring Pakistani women’s health needs and concerns and the action plan that was developed collaboratively with the community as a result. Second, a photovoice project which aims at engaging Pakistani women in Hong Kong through pictures and narratives and providing an alternative platform to define and express emotional struggles in their own terms beyond biomedical categories.

Ultimately the talk will discuss possibilities and challenges of engaged research in the field of health in Hong Kong.

Bio:

Elena Nichini is a PhD graduate from the CUHK Anthropology Department. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK. Her research interests include migrant health, health inequities, social justice and participatory research.

Saba Asim is a PhD candidate at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, CUHK. She holds a B.M.B.S. from the University of Health Sciences Lahore, Pakistan. Her research interests include primary healthcare, ethnically diverse populations, health inequality, health systems, community engagement and participatory research.
