MA in Anthropology Programme (Fall 2025 Admission)

 

For September 2025 admission, the MA in Anthropology programme will be open for application in September 2024, and the application deadlines are:

1st round: 30 September 2024

2nd round: 31 October 2024

3rd round: 30 November 2024

4th round: 31 December 2024

5th round: 31 January 2025

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis from October 2024 until all places have been filled. Therefore, early applications are strongly encouraged. Applications submitted after 31 December 2024 may be considered, subject to availability of places.

The tuition fee (pending university approval) is HK$153,000 per annum (full-time); HK$76,500 per annum (part-time).

Applicants are required to submit the application via the Graduate School Online Application System, and mail the supporting documents to our Division.

Application Documents
  • *Tuition Fee: HK$153,000 per annum (full-time); HK$76,500 per annum (part-time) 
  • Applicants should apply online via the Graduate School Online Application System (starting date: September 2024), upload scanned copies of the following supporting documents to the system, AND mail the hard copies of the documents to the Division of Anthropology by the deadline.

Applications for admission to the MA Programme should include:

  1. Copies of Official transcripts (with a complete record of courses attended and examination results) and grading schemes of all tertiary level studies should be submitted. Please see Graduate School Admission Documents Required for details.
  2. Two confidential recommendations report (online or hard copy). Please see Graduate School Application Procedure for details.
  3. Score reports or certificates as proof of English language proficiency. Please see Graduate School Admission Requirements for details. (Note: For students who graduated from a university that does not use English as the medium of instruction and need to submit English test scores, The Department prefers TOEFL (550 or above, paper-based/79 or above, Internet-based) or IELTS (academic, band 6.5 or above). TOEFL and IELTS scores are considered valid for two years from the test date.)
  4. A copy of the applicant’s HKID card or other identity document.
  5. Copies of certificates of academic qualifications, e.g. university certificate of graduation and degree certificate. (Note: Applicants who obtained degrees from universities in Mainland China are required to provide an Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部學歷證書電子註冊備案表) and a valid Online Verification Report of Higher Education Degree Certificate (中國高等教育學位在線驗證報告) issued by the CHESICC (學信網).
  6. A one-page Statement of Purpose, explaining why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK (See FAQ).

Admission

The programme is intended for intelligent students with university degrees and/or work experience who are eager to study anthropology.

Candidates should meet all Graduate School qualification criteria such as a bachelor’s degrees with second degree honors (lower) or better, and the English language requirements. In unusual cases, students with lower grades may be considered for the programme, but they must offer a justification in their application.

Past academic performance, work experience, references, motivation and language ability will all be considered in the admission decision.

Application Results

Applications will be considered in five rounds, and we encourage students to apply early:

  • Deadline of 1st round application is 30 September 2024.
  • Deadline of 2nd round application is 31 October 2024.
  • Deadline of 3rd round application is 30 November 2024.
  • Deadline of 4th round application is 31 December 2024.
  • Deadline of 5th round application is 31 January 2025.

Application results will be posted on the homepage of the Graduate School from mid-November 2024 to mid-March 2025. Successful applications, in normal case, will receive the offer letter latest by the end of May. Applicants will not be informed separately if their applications are not successful.
