Professor Jing HAN
Professor Jing HAN is the Director of Institute for Australia and Chinese Arts and Culture (IAC) and Professor of translation and interpreting in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts at WSU. She has taught all units in its flagship translation and interpreting program. She has designed and been teaching audiovisual translation and literary translation to postgraduate students and is currently the principal supervisor of five PhD candidates. Professor Han is also a published literary translator who translated a modern Chinese classic Educated Youth by award winning author Ye Xin, published in Australia in 2016 and her Chinese translation of the Miles Franklin Award winning novel Too Much Lip by Melissa Lucashenko was published by China Writers Publishing House in 2021. She is currently translating Where They Lie, a literary thriller by the award-winning Irish writer Claire Coughlan. The Chinese translation is to be published by China Writers Publishing House in 2024.
Subtitling is a highly specialised craft. It is quite different from standard textual translation. The mission of the subtitler is to render speech into a reading format on a visual medium. The transmission is from the source language to the target language and the source culture to the target culture.
Professor Jing HAN, who has subtitled over 300 Chinese films and documentaries in the last 23 years, will unpack the intriguing process of negotiation and manipulation in reining in the cultural and linguistic differences and transforming them into a shape and form recognisable to and accessible by the English speaking audience. She will use some telling examples from the films and TV programs she has subtitled to illustrate creative solutions in subtitling.

This lecture embarks on a twofold exploration. Initially, it delves into the profound legacy of Augustine of Hippo, tracing the contours of his life’s journey and theological contributions. The presentation highlights Augustine’s enduring influence across diverse domains. In a subsequent movement, attention turns to Augustine’s reflections on the Church and Christian community life. As the Bishop of Hippo, his doctrinal contemplations about the Church were intricately shaped by practical experiences, and vice versa. Three pivotal ecclesiological models emerge: (1) the Church as a mixed body and a bond of love, challenging elitist Donatist perspectives; (2) the relationship between the earthly city and the City of God, probing the Church’s societal role; and (3) the total Christ concept, constituting Augustine’s Christological foundation for the Church’s pilgrimage.

Prof. Heung Wah WONG is Associate Professor of Global Creative
Industries Program at The University of Hong Kong. He obtained his PhD
in Social Anthropology from Oxford University in 1996. His research
interest lies in the globalization of Japanese popular culture, anthropology
of business, and cultural policies in East Asia.
Drawing inspiration from Wu Jianren’s renowned novel, Bizarre Happenings Eyewitnessed Over Two Decades, published during the Qing Dynasty in China, this talk presents the author’s observations of peculiar occurrences witnessed over three decades in the field of Japanese Studies. The speaker explores three distinct categories of odd happenings. Firstly, the evaluation system within universities and academic communities is examined, demonstrating its influence on the form and character of academic work in Japanese Studies. Secondly, the talk investigates absurd interpretations found in academic publications within the field of Japanese Studies, highlighting not only their illogical nature but also their acceptance as common sense within academia. Lastly, the talk analyzes the structure of academia as an industry, revealing its impact on the worldview of practitioners. By shedding light on these bizarre phenomena, this talk aims to elucidate the reasons behind the declining readership of practitioners in the field of Japanese Studies, as well as the broader academic world.

Biography:
Yu Zhang is teaching in the Department of Chinese History and Culture at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She received her Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Stanford University. She is the author of Going to the Countryside: The Rural in Modern Chinese Cultural Imagination, 1915-1965 (The University of Michigan Press, 2020). Her other publications appear in Positions: Asia Critique, Modern Chinese Literature and Culture, Journal of Chinese Cinemas, Twentieth-Century China and others. Currently, she is working on a new book titled Wiring the Hearts: A Sentimental History of Phones in China.
Abstract:
When the notion of “finance” re-entered ordinary Chinese people’s lives since the Reform and Opening Up, how were “finance and economics” (caijing) perceived and felt? This talk is situated in the intersection of finance and literary practice and focuses on the Mainland critics’ reviews of the “finance-themed” novels by the Hong Kong entrepreneur-cum-writer Leung Fung Yee (1949- ) and discusses how “Leung fever” (1992-1993) provided a medium for a collective imagination of the financial age. Leung’s fiction introduced “sensuous and lively” financial knowledge particularly attractive to a financially uneducated Mainland readership who nonetheless desired to engage in adventurous economic activities. This coming of the new financial age was first and foremost experienced as an “erotic-speculative sensation” in which an erotic adventure was experienced similar to the financial behavior of speculation. The critics envisioned what I call “the neoliberal labor heroine,” who creatively utilizes the intervals to maximize the productive value and performs “presentist worldly wisdom” to strategically navigate life and achieve optimal outputs and success in a disorienting world.
