Many thinkers – analytic philosophers, pre-analytic philosophers, and scientists alike – have argued for “agent-specific possibilities” (ASP), by which we mean alternative possibilities specifically for the agent that operate within a deterministic physical world. List recently provides a famous multiple realizability model of the view. We argue that previous critiques of the model have overlooked a core argument therein, namely that the assessment should assume an “agential level only” theoretical starting point that starts only from a higher-level perspective. However, through our novel metaphysical and probabilistic analyses, which show that an agential state is inseparably connected to a specific underlying physical state despite its apparent multiple realizability, we demonstrate that ASP theories are ultimately incompatible with a naturalistic worldview.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of our MA in Philosophy Programme, a series of book sharing event titled “MA 20周年慶：齊來讀哲學” will be held from March to October 2024. The 2nd book reading session will be led by Dr. Kwok Pak-nin, Senior Lecturer, Department of Philosophy, CUHK. The purpose of the event is to promote reading of philosophy books and the MA programme to the general public. Dr. Kwok will introduce and share the book for 45 minutes, 2 alumni in the reading group will share the book for 15 minutes each, the rest of time will be Q&A for the participants/general public.

The global economy and international politics have witnessed profound structural shifts during the recent decades. The world is facing rising geopolitical volatility and pressures against globalization. Meanwhile, disruptive technological innovation and economic structural transformation are creating new space for growth. The Belt and Road Initiative has generated new dynamism of development, enhancing connectivity across Asia, Europe and Africa. In this context, how to analyse the opportunities and challenges in China-ASEAN relations and China-Europe relations? How should Hong Kong, and more broadly, China’s Greater Bay Area (GBA), better serve as a “super-connector” to promote connectivity and cooperation between China and other countries in Asia and Europe? Jointly organized by Centre for China Studies, Faculty of Arts, CUHK, and the Institute of International Affairs, CUHK (Shenzhen), the GBA Asia Global Dialogue 2024 convenes leadings scholars and policy experts in the field to address these questions.

“Dialectics of Control: An Inter-Asian Perspective”

Critics have called the 21st century the “Asian Century,” predicting that Asia will lead the cultural and economic development of the world. However, what we have seen across Asia in the last two decades is the rise of authoritarian rule, decoloniality far from complete, modernization extremely uneven, as well as the mutual reinforcement of nationalism and patriarchy. In this workshop, we want to investigate how we can conceptualize and problematize the dialectics of control and freedom in Asia under such circumstances. We want to look back at recent history to explore how power was formed and circulated in different Asian countries. We also want to explore the relationship between governance, cultural production, and knowledge dissemination, and how the people might still be able to negotiate and shape their autonomy. We hope that this workshop could help us fathom the relationship between control and liberation, bringing new insights on nationalism, imperialism and postcolonialism, migration and diaspora, hereditary victimhood nationality, as well as collective trauma and memory.

The goal of this event is to bring specialists from fields as varied as computer science, math, law, and humanities together in an interdisciplinary dialogue, so that the audience will see the state-of-art critique of Generative AI at the intersection of various perspectives. The focus of the panel will be on the nature of creativity in (Large Multimodal Models) LMMs and (Large Language Models) LLMs. Panel speakers will each present one frontier topic of their fields and then hold a roundtable discussion of the above issue.
