Prof. Sea Ling Cheng is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research is focused on sexuality with reference to sex work, human trafficking, women’s activism, and policymaking.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of our MA in Philosophy Programme, a series of book sharing event titled “MA 20周年慶：齊來讀哲學” will be held from March to October 2024. The 4th book reading session will be led by Prof. MANG Fan-lun Franz, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, CUHK. The purpose of the event is to promote reading of philosophy books and the MA programme to the general public. Prof. Mang will introduce and share the book for 45 minutes, 3 alumni in the reading group will share the book for 10-15 minutes each, the rest of time will be Q&A for the participants/general public.

Aphasia refers to language impairments due to brain damage, such as stroke. With a rising bilingual population coinciding with an increase in stroke incidence, the number of bilingual individuals with aphasia is expected to grow. One hallmark symptom of aphasia is naming deficits, characterized by difficulty accessing and retrieving words. Patterns of naming deficits have been found to differ between nouns and verbs in bilinguals with aphasia, but evidence has been limited to typologically similar languages, such as Spanish and English.

Aphasia treatment plays a significant role in improving naming abilities. Treatment approaches targeting the semantic representation level of lexical access have shown significant treatment effects in bilinguals with aphasia. However, most studies have focused on either noun or verb naming ability, without understanding the extent to which treatment effects differ between these word categories. Mandarin-English bilinguals with aphasia provide a unique opportunity to examine noun and verb naming recovery, given the cross-linguistic variations in nouns and verbs.

In this talk, I will discuss two studies that addressed the above issues: (1) patterns of noun and verb naming in single-word naming and discourse production, and (2) patterns of treatment-induced language recovery of nouns and verbs. Additionally, I will present my ongoing research that aims to use fMRI to investigate functional neural changes following naming treatment in Chinese-English bilinguals with aphasia in Hong Kong. This research helps illuminate how the bilingual brain reorganizes as a result of behavioral language therapy.

Dr. LI Ran is an Assistant Professor in the Academy of Language and Culture at Hong Kong Baptist University.She obtained her Ph.D. degree from the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at Boston University. Before joining HKBU, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at The University of Hong Kong. Her research primarily focuses on language recovery in adults with post-stroke aphasia using both behavioral and neuroimaging techniques. Her work has been published in a variety of journals, including American Jouranl of Speech-Language and Pathology, Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, Aphasiology, Neuropsychologia, etc.

Born in Hong Kong and raised in Fuzhou, Liu studied at Hunter College in New York. He was the first Time magazine photojournalist posted in Beijing in 1978. After joining the Associated Press in 1982, he covered significant events in major cities worldwide. Liu has received numerous awards, including the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography.

Liu’s work has profoundly documented changes in Chinese society, with many images becoming iconic representations of contemporary China. In 2023, his major retrospective, ‘Liu Heung Shing: Lens · Era · People’, opened in Shanghai and drew more than 400,000 visitors. In 2024, he started an ambitious project of photographing developments related to the One Belt One Road Initiative.

Recently, the reception studies of Western theories of harmony in various countries have become active, such as those of Hugo Riemann’s theory.. This talk focuses on the characteristics and history of their reception in Japan from the late Meiji era to around 1964, from two perspectives: how to translate harmonic concepts and how to represent chord symbols. Books related to Waseigaku [和声学] are divided into various types: translations mainly from German- and English-speaking theories; integrations from multiple theories; application of theories to Japanese and Eastern music; reflections on circumstances in Japan; and generalizations without specifying theoretical derivations. Along with this development, types of chord symbols are also diversified and coexisting: figured bass using Arabic numbers, scale degrees using Roman numerals, integrated symbols of both, functional symbols, symbols specific to Riemann, and symbols unique to Japan, while the translated terms tend to become standardized. This research provides a starting point for comparing the reception of Western music theory in Japan and other Asian countries.

Prof. Hiroko Nishida

In recent years, high-resolution editions of various Song and Yuan printed versions of the Chinese Tripitaka have been successively published, while Japan's ancient handwritten complete sutras have also been partially made available. Additionally, high-resolution images of Dunhuang manuscripts have largely been released. The release of such a large volume of "new" materials undoubtedly presents an opportunity for the organization and study of Chinese Buddhist literature. However, during the processes of transcription and printing, the texts of the Tripitaka have generated numerous variants, posing significant challenges for the work of organization and research. This lecture will use the "Guang Hong Ming Ji," compiled by the monk Dao Xuan in the early Tang Dynasty, as an example. It aims to comprehensively gather all existing manuscripts and printed editions of this work, carefully compare them, and clarify the sources and transmission among them. In addition to manuscripts and Tripitaka editions, this work also exists in a standalone edition printed in the fourteenth year of the Wanli reign, which gradually became the most widely circulated version and had the greatest impact. This reminds us to reflect on the relationships between early manuscripts, Tripitaka editions, and standalone prints.

The Kyoto School is a philosophical school in Japan centered around Kyoto (Imperial) University, co-founded by Nishida Kitarō and Tanabe Hajime. In recent years, this School has gradually gained international attention in the field of philosophy, partly due to the establishment of international academic societies and journals on Japanese philosophy.
However, due to the way Japanese philosophy has been received in the West since the 1960s, it is often characterized as an antithesis to Western philosophy by overemphasizing the “Japanese” or “Eastern” nature of Japanese philosophy. Both Nishida and Tanabe indeed emphasized the Eastern characteristics of their philosophies in their later years, and the fundamental concept of “absolute nothingness” in their philosophies may have strengthened their Eastern character. Nevertheless, when Nishida and Tanabe established their respective philosophical standpoints, the “logic of place” and the “logic of species,” and proposed the concept of absolute nothingness, they were not grounded in “Eastern” concepts but rather in Western philosophy. They advocated these in response to the question of what constitutes true knowledge. This talk aims to elucidate how they established the “logic of place” and the “logic of species” as theories of knowledge, which are the basis of the Kyoto School philosophies.

Fashion department stores exclusively targeting youths have become common landmarks of major transit terminals like Shinjuku and Umeda, as well as regional cities, from Sapporo to Kagoshima. This retail format has recently made international advances to Asian cities of Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore. Taking the “fashion buildings” as a retail format that emerged in response to exploding railway ridership during the 1960s and 1970s, this talk traces its genealogy from the late 1960s to the present. 
The talk claims that the retail format went through four developmental stages. First, the format was established during the 1970s amid the intense rivalry of Tokyo-based retail chains, most notably Seibu, Tokyu, and Marui. Second, rival private railway companies and general merchandiser appropriated the concept and expanded fashion buildings to metropolitan suburbs and regional cities during the 1980s. Third, the privatized Japan Railway (JR) embraced the retail concept at the heart of is diversification strategy from the 1990s onward. And fourth, the format was exported to Asian societies and, in Hong Kong, being evolved into “art malls” by Adrian Cheng.
