Professor Ting-Chi WEI (National Kaohsiung Normal University)
Professor Ting-Chi Wei is currently Professor at Graduate Institute of Taiwan History, Culture, and Languages and Department of Indigenous People in Language and Culture, National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan. His research interests focus on syntactic issues in regard to ellipsis, fragments, empty categories, scope and parallelism, word order, adverbial clauses and interrogatives in Mandarin Chinese, Taiwanese, and Formosan languages.

After the Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659), the small states of northern Italy realised that their previously powerful protector, the Spanish monarchy, was far less capable of aiding their interests. As a result, the dukes of Parma, Modena, and Mantua-Monferrato tried to forge strong connections with Bourbon France, in the hope that the youthful Louis XIV would respect the ancient lineages of each ruling dynasty. The fact that Louis’s first minister, Cardinal Jules Mazarin (d. 1661), was Italian, briefly encouraged them to gravitate towards Paris as opposed to Madrid or Vienna. 

However, the princes of Italy were to be disappointed in their hopes for a close and lucrative relationship with the French crown. This paper analyses the diplomacy which the Italian princes employed in France. Prominent noblewomen also contributed to diplomatic successes or failures, and their importance in the sphere of international relations will be discussed here. This paper explores issues of international weakness, and the struggles that small states faced in asserting their interests against those of larger powers – an issue of considerable relevance today.

Throughout world history, great empires rose and fell. Sometimes they returned with great regularity, most notably in China, and sometimes they re-appeared at greater intervals, as in India or the Middle East. Only in Western Europe did large-scale empire disappear after the collapse of the Roman empire. This developmental rupture generated enduring fragmentation both between and within societies. The resultant diversity and intense competition encouraged political, economic, scientific, and technological breakthroughs that eventually enabled Europe to surge ahead and extend its influence around the globe. Thus, the fall of ancient Rome can be seen as the root cause of modernization.

Walter Scheidel is Dickason Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Classics and History at Stanford University. His work ranges from ancient social and economic history and premodern historical demography to the comparative and transdisciplinary world history of inequality, state formation, and human welfare.

Specifically, in pursuit of a collaborative community and excellence in language education, the Catalytic EAC Team (the Team) has worked tirelessly towards a learner-centred three-pronged approach, reflecting their insights and resilience: 1) Faculty-based ELTU Curriculum, 2) Programme or course-based EAC Project, and 3) Individual-based learning support through the Peer-tutoring Scheme.

The Team is led by Dr Jose Lai, Director of ELTU, with strong support from four Senior Lecturers, namely Dr Olive Cheung, Dr Allen Ho, Ms Ella Leung, and Mr Steven Yeung. “It never occurred to me that we will receive such a prestigious award from the University. Really glad to learn that our hard work in enhancing academic literacy has paid off,” said Dr. Lai, who was thrilled and greatly honoured to have received the award. “It represents collective achievements for the entire Unit because most of our colleagues, including teaching, project and administrative staff members have also played a part in the process. Credits should be given to all concerned.”

The Team recognises the importance of maximising student engagement in the learning process. 3Rs – relevance, readiness, and reflection – are three highlighted elements of the Team’s teaching philosophy. In designing learning materials or activities, they observe the relevance of language learning to students’ respective subject learning experience. In delivering their learning support, they do their best to provide intervention at the opportune moment to ensure student readiness. In improving their practice, they conduct reflection to review experience and outcomes. 

To complement the formal ELTU curriculum, the Team has launched two signature projects that won them the University Education Award – English Across the Curriculum (EAC) and the Peer-tutoring Scheme (PTS). EAC is the largest scale of interdisciplinary collaboration across the University to date. The Team collaborates closely with content teachers to enhance students’ disciplinary literacies through the integration of content learning and English learning. 

PTS offers informal opportunities for students to consult trained peer tutors on the use of English language in different areas of need. The Team has engaged students as partners (SaP) in the process and provided a supportive platform for both the peer tutors and peer tutees to grow and shine. Due to the diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds of most tutors, PTS has also created a natural platform for internationalisation at home to take place.
The University Education Award is a prestigious University-level award to commend outstanding faculty members for their significant contributions to enhancing student-learning experience. It is presented each year to up to three outstanding staff members or teams.

In the welcoming speech, Dean of Arts Prof. Max Tang mentioned that due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was only the second time he attended the Faculty Welcoming Reception since 2019. He was glad to meet all the freshmen on the first school day of the new academic year 2022-23. He encouraged students to take part in various activities and become an active member of CUHK ARTS, a diverse and inclusive learning community.

Then, Prof. Peggy Mok, Associate Dean of Arts (Student Affairs), shared some useful information with freshmen like Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Development Portfolio, Co-op Programme and Overseas Exchange Opportunities. She hoped students could have a brief idea of how to plan their study journey in CUHK.

All freshmen also joined the Programme Casual Exchange Session. They benefited a lot from their programme representatives and student ambassadors on how to prepare their new study life in CUHK ARTS.



At the end of the event, Faculty Office of Arts delivered Faculty T-Shirts and folders to all freshmen as souvenir. As Dean Tang mentioned, he believed all students had enjoyed the event and looked forward to meeting them on CUHK campus.

Love on the Spectrum is an Australian reality series that follows a number of young adults on the autism spectrum, as they search for love and go on dates with others who also are on the spectrum. The show ran for two seasons,  in  2019  and  2021,  and  was  recently also made in a US version. The series was generally well-reviewed both by people who themselves are on the spectrum and by neurotypical viewers. Much of the charm of the series is that it evokes  laughter,  frequently at the seriousness of the people it portrays. My talk will explore how the series invites viewers to find the protagonists’  serious behaviour funny. I will compare the laughter raised during Love on the Spectrum with laughter encouraged by British comedian Ricky Gervais’s 2012-2014   series Derek, which is about a character whom many viewers identified as being on the  autism spectrum. I will discuss similarities between the two series, but will conclude by proposing that the laughter invited by seriousness during these two series in fact is structured very differently.

Don Kulick (Chair Professor of Anthropology, HKU)
Professor Don Kulick is Chair Professor of Anthropology at HKU and Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology at Uppsala University, Sweden. His  books  include  A Death in the Rainforest: How a Language and a Way of Life Came to an End in Papua New Guinea (2019);  Loneliness and its Opposite: Sex, Disability and the Ethics of Engagement (with  J  Rydström,  2015);  Language and Sexuality (with  D  Cameron,  2003)  and  Travesti: Sex, Gender and Culture among Brazilian Transgendered Prostitutes (1998).

'Before and After Books: Film and Performance Ethnography' will explore a selection of applied anthropology practices that allow for an enlargement of the scholarship form.

The seminar will introduce creative and artistic ways of gathering, processing and divulgating anthropological data, with a particular interest on movie making and the cinematic form,  as  well as rituality and performance. Dwelling in  the borderlands between art and academia, these performative approaches to fieldwork engage informants and audiences through participatory methods,  elevating  their  agency as that of co-authors, and allowing for serendipity to dictate the course of action.

Some of the analysed ethnographies constitute a collective re-appropriation of the means of representation by  subaltern  groups;  while others make use of parody, playfulness and irony as methods for raising awareness  of power relations within a specific community.

Ultimately, these methods depart from the conventional anthropological practice, celebrate imponderabilia (Malinowski) and are an invitation for further experimentation within poetics and politics of knowledge production.

Alberto Gerosa is an anthropologist working with film and performance. He  holds a BA  in  Performing  Arts and Social Sciences,  a joint master of research in Social and Cultural Anthropology from Ljubljana and Stockholm Universities, and a PhD in Cultural and Religious Studies from CUHK. He taught documentary filmmaking at  Antwerp  University  between  2012  and  2014.  In  2015-2019  he was a visiting scholar at the Image Anthropology LAB, University of Tokyo,  working  with  visual  anthropologist  Tadashi  Yanai. In  2019- 2021, he taught cinema and performance at Hong Kong Baptist University and Beijing Normal University UIC.

The concept of Musical Identities is twofold (MacDonald et al., 2002, 2017). They refer to the defined social and cultural roles within music (identities in music) for example the development of Musical Identities through enculturation, the school environment and performances. At the same time, Musical Identities also refer to how human use music as a means to develop other aspects of personal identities (music in identities) for instance gender identity, identity in adolescence, national identity and teacher identity. In this study, a theoretical framework of Role-identity Theory (McCall & Simmons, 1978) and Musical Identities (MacDonald et al., 2002, 2017) will be adopted to understand the development of multiple identities in a Hong Kong primary music teacher and explore the relationship between various social contexts and the development of her multiple identities. As part of the doctoral research, this qualitative single case study uses an experiential research methodology, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), to explore the personal meaning and lived experience of the case participant. The findings from the first phase reveal the multiplicity of roles and identities within their teaching contexts as well as their ongoing and previous musical experiences which lead to two emergent questions for the next phase of the research: Are the multiple identities mutually supportive or subject to tensions? What is the relationship between teacher’s agency and the performance of identities?

Stephanie Hoi-Ying Chan

Stephanie Hoi-Ying Chan is currently a PhD candidate in Music Education at the Institute of Education, University College London (UCL) under the supervision of Dr Jo Saunders and Professor Graham Welch. Stephanie’s doctoral research explores the development of multiple identities in primary music teachers, music teacher's identity negotiation and teacher's agency. Her other research interests include musical development in children and adolescents, national identity and the school music curriculum as well as curriculum development.

Stephanie read Music at the Hong Kong Baptist University and later completing an MA in Music Education at the Institute of Education, UCL. Stephanie was previously a primary school teacher, piano teacher and research assistant in Music Education before embarking on her doctoral journey. Since 2021, Stephanie has been working for the MA Music Education at UCL and being recognised as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

In this talk, Prof. Cha will show us how to break new ground on digital historical scholarship. Prof. Cha will propose the idea that historians build project-specific personal libraries rather than engage in macro-level “distant readings” of a centralized repository. His methodological intervention emphasizes contextualization and authentication in data-driven historical research, which, in technological terms, translates into robust management of records culled from a variety of pertinent databases.. Using medieval Korean biographical records as an example, Prof. Cha will demonstrate how digital historians can use a Neo4j-powered macroscope to zero in on potentially insightful fields of view.

Prof. Javier Cha is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Hong Kong. As an intellectual historian of medieval Korea and a technologist, he has been active in the digital humanities community for fourteen years. Prof. Cha is the director of the Big Data Studies Lab, which examines data centers and the global telecommunications infrastructure in a manner comparable to how a book historian investigates medieval manuscripts and libraries. He serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Humanities and Arts Computing and Cursor Mundi, as well as the international nominations committee for Digital Humanities Awards.
