Learning out of “Nurturing” and Spirit out of “Living”: Chen Yuan, Lü Simian, Ch’ien Mu, and Jao Tsung-I in the History of Modern Education and Scholarship
本次講座選擇陳垣、呂思勉、錢穆、饒宗頤這四位現代中國著名史學家，談論他們的“學問”與“精神”，探討在西式學堂一統天下的現代中國，這四位“自學成才”的史學家，是如何憑藉個人努力與蓋世才華，走出一條非同尋常的學術道路，由此引發關於人文學的邊界、方法及可能性的思考與探索。本講座將重點討論如下問題：一、學問為何需要“養”；二、自學成才的可能性；三、讀書門徑與研究方法；四、別出心裁的著述體例；五、兼及“思想”與“文章”。

陳平原，廣東潮州人，文學博士，現為北京大學博雅講席教授（2008—2012年任北大中文系主任）、教育部“長江學者”特聘教授、中央文史研究館館員，國務院學位委員會第六、第七屆中國語言文學學科評議組成員。2008年1月—2015年1月兼任香港中文大學中國語言及文學系講座教授（與北京大學合聘）。曾被國家教委和國務院學位委員會評為“作出突出貢獻的中國博士學位獲得者”（1991）；獲教育部頒發的第一、第二、第三、第五、第六屆高等學校科學研究優秀成果獎（1995，1998，2003，2009，2013），以及第四屆王瑤學術獎著作獎（2016）、第四屆思勉原創獎（2017）、第十四屆文津圖書獎（2019）、第五屆中國出版政府獎提名獎（2021）等。先後出版《中國小說敘事模式的轉變》《千古文人俠客夢》《中國現代學術之建立》《觸摸歷史與進入五四》《作為學科的文學史》《左圖右史與西學東漸》《想像都市》《記憶北京》《現代中國的述學文體》《文學如何教育》《小說史學面面觀》等著作三十餘種。

After preliminary round, the selection panel has already ranked the top 10 entries for faculty members, students and alumni to vote. Please cast your vote for one of the entries below. Each person can vote for one design and multiple voting is not allowed. The votes will be confidential. The personal information collected is for authentication purpose only.
The winning entry may be adopted in the production of Faculty souvenirs such as folder, laptop sleeve and tote bag. Below are the selection criteria for your reference:
• Relevance to the theme (e.g. whether it reflects the aspiration of the Faculty of Arts and its values)
• Originality and creativity
• Aesthetic quality
• Practical functionality (e.g. how easily the design can be adopted in the production of CUHK Arts souvenirs, or how appropriate it is to be used on souvenirs)

Break Out S2 (2): Anastassis Vistonitis (Greece), Wang Jiaxin (China) and Qian Yingchao (China)
With the Faculty of Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as one of its sponsors, the Hong Kong Poetry Festival Foundation (HKPFF) has launched Season 2 of Break Out: IPNHK Reading & Dialogue Series in November 2021.
The latest event of the series, featuring Greece poet Anastassis Vistonitis, Chinese poet and translator Wang Jiaxin ,and Chinese translator Qian Yingchao, will take place on 4 December 2021 at 8:00pm via Ifeng, Facebook and YouTube.

Anastassis Vistonitis (Greece) was born in Komotini, Northern Greece. He studied Political Sciences and Economics in Athens, and Philosophy in Thessaloniki. From 1996 to 2001, he was a board member of the E.W.C. (The Federation of European Writers) and 2 years later, he became the Vice-president. Vistonitis has published 12 books of poetry, 4 volumes of essays, 5 travelogues, a book of short stories and a book of translations of the Chinese poet, Li He. Vistonitis was the General Editor of the candidature file of Athens for the Olympic Games of 2004. His writings have been translated into 20 languages and he was a writer for the leading Greek newspaper To Vima, whilst living in Athens.

Wang Jiaxin
Chinese Poet
Wang Jiaxin is a poet, essayist, critic and translator. He was born in 1957 in Hubei Province. In 1978, he enrolled in Wuhan University, studying Chinese literature. 7 years later, he moved to Beijing and began working as an editor for the journal Poetry. Since 2006, he has been a Professor of Literature at Renmin University of China. Wang Jiaxin is one of China’s most eminent contemporary poets. He is highly regarded not only for his poetry, but also for his essays, criticism and translations. Jiaxin has been frequently invited to attend the international literary festivals and hold readings in many countries. A collection of his poems: Dämmerung auf Gotland, translated by Wolfgang Kubin, published in Austria in 2011; Nachgereichte Gedichte (A Late Dedication), translated by Wolfgang Kubin, published in Austria in 2017; Night Train, translated by Miroslav Kirin, published in Croatia in 2017; Een asgrauwe dageraad, translated by Silvia Marijnissen, published in Holland in 2021. Furthermore, his collection of poems in English, titled Darkening Mirror, New & Selected Poems, translated by Diana Shi & George O’Connell, foreword by Robert Hass, was published in the US in 2017.

Qian Yingchao
Translator
Qian Yingchao is a lecturer and Head of Greek Department in the School of European Languages and Cultures of Beijing Foreign Studies University. She graduated from Shanghai International Studies University and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. From there, Yingchao continued pursuing her studies as a PhD candidate of University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. Since 2016, she has been working in Beijing Foreign Studies University, focusing on her priority research areas of modern Greece and Sino-Greek relations. Her work consists of: Heroes’ world-Homeric Hymns, translation One child counts the stars.
