Curated by Professor Max Xiaobing Tang of the Faculty of Arts, the second season of Break Out: IPNHK Reading & Dialogue Series will present contemporary poets from Portugal, Greece, Russia, the US and Mainland China along with their translators. Two of the seven sessions will pay tribute to important poets of the past. To further enrich online participants’ appreciation of poetry and art, each session will be accompanied by a dance film, a musical performance, or a presentation of visual arts.

The first event of the series, featuring Portuguese poet Ana Luísa Amaral and Yao Feng, her Chinese translator and a poet himself, will take place on 20 November 2021 at 8:00pm via different online platforms.

Contra recent semantic-pragmatic analyses of insignificance shenmesentences (ISS) in Chinese (mei V shenme NP), this talk aims to provide asyntactic Neg Raising analysis. It is argued that the insignificance readingin ISS is not related to shenme alone, but related to mei shenme‘few/little’ as a whole. Due to high analyticity in Modern Chinese, mei inmei shenme NPs needs to raise from a postverbal object position upwardto a TP-below negation phrase, which is distinct from a TP-above negationphrase. In this vein, the puzzles in ISS can be explained naturally. Thisanalysis can also be extended to other sentences with similar meaning.The current analysis explores the interaction among negation, non-interrogative wh-words and focus from an interface perspective. Itdemonstrates how mismatches have been produced and how Chinesegrammar is constrained by linguistic interfaces as lexicon, syntax, andprosody.

Online learning has emerged as the “new norm” due to the COVID-19 crisis. Compared with institutions’ and teachers’ responses to online teaching, little is known about students’ perceived influence of online assessment practices. The present study explored the perceived effects of learning-oriented online assessment on L2 students’ feedback literacy and individual differences in feedback literacy development from an ecological perspective. We used multiple sources of data, including a survey on student feedback literacy, semi-structured interviews with two focal students, drafts produced by them and related teacher feedback, and supplementary data reflecting the online assessment practices in the course. Results demonstrated that the students held less favorable opinions of the online mode of learning in promoting feedback literacy. However, they perceived positively the development of feedback literacy in both cognitive and behavioral dimensions. Considerable variations were identified in the development of two focal students’ feedback literacy, especially in the affective and behavioral dimensions. The findings revealed the negative influence of misalignment between micro- and macro- factors on student feedback literacy and how such a misalignment shapes individual differences in feedback literacy when learning-oriented assessment (LOA) was implemented during COVID-19. The paper proposes a fine-grained model for developing student feedback literacy through learning-oriented online assessment. With a special focus on misalignment, the model provides insights into the interactional dynamics among learners, classroom, and larger contexts in using LOA to enhance student feedback literacy online. Relevant pedagogical implications for developing student feedback literacy within and beyond COVID-19 are discussed.

This talk explores the repertoires of care practised by rural adults in two counties (one in Anhui and one in Jiangxi) in China’s eastern interior in the 2010s as they raised children in support of their families’ education-oriented migration projects. Rural parents and grandparent-caregivers practised the repertoires of ‘re-valorised domesticity’ and the ‘entrustment’ of children’s education to schools. Importantly, though, rural families’ enactments of these repertoires varied by the adults’ social locations as well as by the characteristics of the local schools, including whether schools provided accommodation and meals and whether there was a buoyant private school sector. Certainly, schools significantly supplemented rural families’ child-raising, albeit differently across different families and localities, with rural teachers commonly perceiving that parental migration worsened rural adults’ lack of involvement in their children’s education, exacerbating their own professional burdens. However, contrary to the teachers’ and the wider society’s perceptions, rural adults were deeply committed to their children’s education, with this commitment underlaying their repertoires of care.

Rachel Murphy is Professor of Chinese Development and Society in the Oxford School of Global and Area Studies and a fellow of St Antony’s College, Oxford. She completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge. Her research sits at the intersections of area studies, development sociology and anthropological demography. Her most recent monograph is The Children of China’s Great Migration (Cambridge University Press, 2020).. It draws on longitudinal fieldwork with children, their caregivers and migrant parents from two landlocked provinces in eastern China in the 2010s. The book provides a rare exploration of migration, urbanization, education, and families’ gender and intergenerational relations through the eyes of rural children whose parents have migrated for work without them. Her recent papers appear or are forthcoming in Journal of Rural Studies and Comparative Education Review. Rachel is also President of the British Association for Chinese Studies.

This talk focuses on the civilization of war, defined as the increasing presence of civilians not only as victims but also as supporters of and participants in conflicts between states. In the context of China, the fleeing Nationalist government during the War of Resistance assigned the duties of “resisting the enemy” and “protecting the homeland” to the general population. The ending of the Second Sino-Japanese War marked a crucial step in the nation-building project in China. The whole population, based on their newly granted eligibility for martyrdom, was incorporated into the nation-state. The Nationalist government viewed military and civilian casualties as resistance to the enemy and confirmation of its legitimacy.. The people were made to “pay for their participation in political life with an unconditional subjection to the power of death,” as Giorgio Agamben theorizes. Death from overexertion while on duty, at the hand of enemy soldiers, or by war-related catastrophes became a Chinese citizen’s ultimate sacrifice for the nation. When the state granted to each of its members the right to die as a martyr, the necropower of the state was not limited to subjecting segments of the population to death. It included urging civilians to take their own lives in exchange for posthumous honors.

Linh Vu is Assistant Professor of history in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona, USA. Her first book, Governing the Dead: Martyrs, Memorials, and Necrocitizenship in Modern China (Cornell University Press, 2021), examines the efforts of the Chinese nation-state to record, commemorate, and compensate for military and civilian dead and how such efforts transformed China’s social and cultural institutions. Her ongoing projects include war commemoration, virtuous citizenship, terrorism and insurgencies, and sovereignty at the turn of the twentieth century in East and Southeast Asia. She teaches such courses as violence in modern China, memories of wars, and global history.

 

Motivated by Debating the A Priori (P. Boghossian & T. Williamson 2020), this talk is an initial attempt to engage some of its main issues from a particular angle, viz., how to justify a notion of retrospective a priori (closely associated with a technical notion of path-dependent necessity). The overarching questions of the book concern the nature of armchair knowledge (which distinctively characterizes philosophy in general), and the relationship between analyticity, apriority, and necessity (which had become especially intriguing after Kripke 1980). I will briefly lay out a few preliminary notions (such as metaphysical vs epistemological conceptions of analyticity introduced by Boghossian 1996) before I get to my own argument for the tenability of retrospective a priori. The argument will draw on Davidson’s idea about converting a causal statement into one of superficial analyticity, as well as Lewis’s well-known counterfactual analysis of causation. The upshot of the talk might hopefully shed some light on the general prospect of doing fruitful armchair philosophy within a broad naturalistic framework and without transgressing into the non-armchair territory of science.

Yujian Zheng is currently a visiting professor in CUHK, with many years as an academic in the philosophy department of Lingnan University. His research interests include dynamic rationality and evolutionary normativity, in the overlapping areas of action, mind, and metaethics. RCT’s publications consist of two streams: literary translation and translation studies. The former includes Renditions, the flagship biannual journal of Chinese literature in English translation since 1973, the hardback series Renditions Books, and Renditions Paperbacks series. The latter, demonstrating RCT’s efforts in advancing cutting-edge translation research, includes the annual academic journal Studies in Translation History and three book series, namely Asian Translation Traditions Series, Studies in Translation History, and Translation Studies Research Series.

Professor Lawrence Wang-chi Wong, Director of RCT, said, “Our Centre shares the Faculty’s mission of upholding and promoting the value of integrating Chinese and Western traditions. This book is about the pivotal role that the Chinese Youth Party (CYP) played in the making and unmaking of the Chinese radical right between the late 1910s to the late 1940s. Tracing the founding of the CYP out of the Young China Association in both China and Europe, the author presents the May Fourth, not simply as a rupture, but also as a bridge between the emergent cultural conservatism in the late Qing and the rising political right in the 1920s in the first part of the book. The second part of the book explores CYP’s ideology and political movements, its military mobilization in North China, and its successful local construction in Sichuan. In doing so, the author highlights the CYP as a leading force of the Chinese radical right in the 1920s and 1930s. The last part of the book focuses on the CYP’s 1940s deradicalization and examines how the party turned into a civil opposition force. By this book, the author argues that CYP stood at the forefront of the global right in competition with the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Nationalist Party.

Nagatomi Hirayama is an assistant professor of modern Chinese history at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China. He is an intellectual and political historian studying in particular the formation and transformation of modern Chinese mass-party politics. His book, entitled “The Making and Unmaking of the Chinese Radical Right, 1918–1951,” is now in press at Cambridge University Press. His other publications previously appeared in Twentieth-Century China, Historical Research, and Frontiers of History in China.
