To mark the Chinese translation of her book, A Primer in Ecotheology: Theology for a Fragile World, Professor Deane-Drummond, a leading scholar, will sketch the developments of ecotheology in the last half-century. Six years ago, Pope Francis issued Laudato Si', a groundbreaking encyclical calling on all Catholics and people of goodwill toward ecological conversion. Members of faith communities and academic institutes are invited to join in this urgent discussion—how to respond and put in practice ecological awareness.

Many attempts have been made to solve these two problems in light of contemporary phonology, particularly in Onset-Rhyme (OR) model of syllable structure (Pike & Pike 1947) which is well-attested cross-linguistically. Generally, there are six different attempts to represent the Chinese syllable structure, arguing over the affiliation of the prenuclear glide, which is the typical complexity of the Chinese syllable structure and is also a big challenge for the well-attested OR model. Some attempts have proposed that the prenuclear glide occupies the second position in the onset. Some have proposed that the glide is part of the nucleus. Others regard the glide as a secondary articulation on the onset consonant. Others still think of the glide as an independent branch directly linking to the syllable node. Also some have proposed an IF model with Initial for Shengmu and Final for Yunmu which binarily branches into G(lide) and R(hyme) consisting of N(ucleus) and C(oda). And also some have put forward a universal X-bar model of the syllable to replace the OR model, based on syntactic X-bar structure. So far, there has been no authoritative opinion to conclusively decide the Chinese syllable structure.

This study is to revisit the Chinese syllable structure by analyzing the previous attempts, focusing on the prenuclear glide to see if we can find a better solution which should be not only compatible with principles of contemporary phonology, but also well satisfy the factual data of Chinese language.

Jisheng Zhang (1955- ), Ph.D. in LUCL, Leiden University, the Netherlands, professor of linguistics in East China Normal University, is academically interested in phonology, focusing on Chinese phonology and sign language phonology, and is the author of The Phonology of Shaoxing Chinese (2006), The Phonology of Shanghai Sign Language (2019), Contrastive Studies of English and Chinese Phonology (2020) and about 60 articles published in Lingua, Journal of Chinese Linguistics, Studies of the Chinese Language, Contemporary Linguistics, Linguistic Sciences, Journal of Foreign Languages, etc. He is a winner of Outstanding Achievement Award in Humanities and Social Sciences by Ministry of Education (2009) and Shanghai Philosophy and Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award (2008, 2012, 2016). He is also a peer reviewer of such journals as International Journal of Chinese Linguistics, Language and Linguistics, Journal of Chinese Linguistics, Journal of East Asian Linguistics, Lingua, Australian Journal of Linguistics, International Phonetic Association, Journal of Phonetics and System.

Professor Jack Cheung will introduce the Chapel’s architectural glamour, and the historic contributions of Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres to Hong Kong’s social welfare services.

Mr. Alex Cheung will guide you through two historic buildings on St. Joseph’s campus, which epitomises the missions of De La Salle Brothers, who have been committed to educating the poor for nearly one and a-half centuries.

This talk aims to show that in order to account for the otherwise unexplained discourse-related phenomena in Mandarin Chinese, it is necessary to syntactically probe into somewhere higher than CP, perhaps into the discourse domain. Evidence will be provided with three types of less-noticed wh-elements, the sentence-final refutatory WHAT, the sentence-initial negative WHAT, and the speculative HOW. The three wh-elements are assumed to be base-generated on top of a sentence to represent the speaker force/attitude and to better account for their syntactic distributions. By so doing, Chinese provides a nice perspective looking into the syntax-pragmatics/discourse interface, which, in turn, contributes to the theoretical exploration toward the edge of sentences, a trend that is still in its ascendant.

Professor Barry C.-Y. Yang is currently Associate Professor of Language and Linguistic studies and Director in the Language Center at National United University, Taiwan. His research interests include syntactic theories, Chinese syntax, and syntax-semantics/pragmatics interface. His research topics include intervention effects, null subject phenomena, applicatives, and non-canonical whs.

In Wakhi, the word stress would be otherwise regular in location at the phonetic level if morphological factors and other phonological factors were excluded. The analysis given shows that the word stress placement is morphologically sensitive, and that the irregularities in word stress placement observed at the phonetic level can be assumed to be derived by phonological rules the operations of which are triggered by syllabification. At the level of abstract lexical representation, the stress assignment is regular. 
From cross-language perspectives, the description and analysis of the word stress in Wakhi as presented would be of theoretic significance, as stated:
1. Word stress may be introduced into morphemes and complex words by some word stress assignment rule.
2. Word stress assignment rule may operate at some abstract level of representation, rather than at the phonetic level.
3. The location of word stress is unpredictable at the level of observation, but at the abstract level of representation, the stress location is predictable; the surface irregularity can be assumed to be derived by a set of ordered phonological rules.
4. The domain of word stress assignment may be morphologically defined.
5. The vowels, rather than the syllable, can be the stress-bearing unit.

Li Bing (李兵),Ph. D. in Linguistics (UvA, Netherlands), Professor at the Linguistics Program, College of Foreign Languages and Literature, Nankai University. His academic interest includes phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, Altaic languages and Wakhi. He is the author of the books Tungusic Vowel Harmony: Description and Analysis, The Language of Oroqen (co-authored with others), and Vowel Harmony in Altaic Languages and several dozens of research articles. Language fieldwork is one of his favourites. Currently he works on China’s Wakhi, an Eastern Iranian language.
