This workshop will enable attendees to develop an appreciation of the Hindustani music system of North India with an introduction to Raaga music, including:

•    Its aesthetics and their relation to human emotions
•    Its components of melody, rhythm, and improvisation
•    A brief history of its development
•    Its performance in vocal, instrumental, popular and world music.

In this talk, based on his recent book and other research, the speaker narrates stories of rural communities’ encounters with the communist revolution in southern Zhejiang. Using data from local state archives, records of religious institutions, oral history as well as field investigation, the talk will present a complex picture of religious life after 1949: moments of suppression, moments of violence, moments of survival as well as moments of reinvention. It shows how the Maoist legacy is crucial to the understanding of religion in China today.

Xiaoxuan Wang is Visiting Assistant Professor at the Centre for China Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. A social historian of modern China, his work concerns everyday life and the state since the turn of the twentieth century, combing archival research and ethnographical study. His first book: Maoism and Grassroots Religion: The Communist Revolution and the Reinvention of Religious Life in China, was published by Oxford University Press in 2020. He is currently pursuing two research projects: one examines the urban turn of religion in contemporary China, another is a history of Chinese emigration to Europe in the long twentieth century.

In the modern era, few would have imagined that meeting loved ones could be difficult or that even leaving home for a walk may not be allowed. COVID-19 has posed a serious threat to more than 200 countries, causing over four million deaths worldwide and leading to unprecedented large-scale lockdowns.. Given the physical restrictions, social media platforms have become a crucial means of communication amid the pandemic. This talk explores how online users employed animal metaphors to portray the identities of people who fled Wuhan, the epicentre of the outbreak. Using data collected from the Chinese microblogging site Weibo, I illustrate how different kinds of animal metaphors were deployed to foreground the perceived objectionable behaviour and moral standards of these people. I argue that while dehumanising them by likening their health status to that of infected animals, the posters unconsciously revealed their helplessness and inability to control the situation, reflecting ideological ambivalence.

Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Lingnan University
Janet Ho is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Lingnan University. She is interested in uncovering impositions of power, exploitation, and stigmatisation in discourses. Her main research foci are discursive representation of identity, media framing, and metaphors.

廣東清代經濟的黃金時期，是在乾隆到道光初年，這一百多年中，積累了大量的財富，也產生了大收藏家，風雅的商人，著名的書畫家與藝術家等。本講座以黎簡和謝蘭生兩位代表性的文人為例，從一個側面展示文化和藝術的興盛，以及他們與商業社會之間千絲萬縷的聯繫，代表了鴉片戰爭之前廣東典型的社會生態。

梁基永，出生於廣州西關的清代科舉與洋商世家，廣州中山大學古典文獻學博士，廣東文獻學者與收藏家、書畫家，對廣東歷史文化各學科多有涉獵，著述有《黎簡》、《李文田》、《清代禁毀書目考補註》、《嶺南草木狀》、《清代翰林與香港》等。

16世紀至19世紀中葉，隨著貿易制度轉型與發展，在全球經濟與市場需求刺激下，江西景德鎮，廣東廣州、佛山、潮州，福建德化、漳州等地外銷瓷業蓬勃發展，在生產-技術-運輸-銷售-消費鏈條中形成跨區域的面向國際的運營方式和網絡體系，瓷器大批量輸往全球市場，「海上陶瓷之路」比「海上絲綢之路」不遑多讓。外銷陶瓷業成為沿海地區經濟的增長點，是早期全球化時代中國經濟與世界互動對接、率先從傳統向近代轉型的外向型手工業部門。

「中國風」興起於17世紀中葉，在18世紀達到頂峰，自19世紀逐漸式微，在接近兩個世紀裡風靡歐洲。「中國風」體現出與歐洲當時流行的洛可可藝術水乳交融的特徵。18世紀晚期，新古典主義興起，「中國風」逐步退出流行，並於19世紀早期結束。在「中國風」盛行的近兩百年裡，陶瓷器一直是中西貿易的主要商品之一。在此期間的中國外銷陶瓷對歐洲的社會生活帶來了顯著的影響，主要體現在以下幾個方面：

一是以中國瓷器裝飾宮殿、家居、花園等，或在宮殿、府邸內設置中國瓷器展示室。
二是成套餐飲用具的定制，使中國陶瓷器滲透于當時歐洲富有階層日常生活中的方方面面。
三是人物瓷塑的流行。
四是中國外銷瓷器中洛可可元素的完美呈現。
五是歐洲來華定制的瓷器中，彰顯個性和凸顯身份地位的紋章瓷大量出現。
六是對中國傳統紋樣瓷器的追捧。
七是外來定制的器物大增，使明清瓷器中西方器型、西方紋飾的器物數量劇增。
八是對中國陶瓷器的模仿及中國風瓷器的生產。

講者：黄静主任 (廣東省博物館藏品管理與研究部主任，研究員)
黃靜，1987年畢業於中山大學歷史系歷史學專業。同年到廣東省博物館工作。現任廣東省博物館藏品管理與研究部主任，研究館員。中國古陶瓷學會理事。廣東省文物保護基金會理事。廣東省文物行業協會理事。廣東省博物館協會藏品管理專業委員會秘書長。主要從事古陶瓷的研究、鑒定、陳列展覽等方面的工作，尤其側重於古代外銷陶瓷的研究。主持展覽多個。已發表學術文章數十篇，出版學術著作《揚帆珠江口——南海海上絲綢之路與外銷陶瓷》、《器成天下走：明清外銷瓷研究》等。

如此數量豐富、琳琅滿目的新見材料令人應接不暇，不但擴充了我們對於吐蕃時期所創造的燦爛的高原文化的認知，同時也不得不促使學術界重新反思該區域在吐蕃時期的開放性和包容性。而目前學術界所面臨的一個迫切而具有挑戰、且相當有吸引力的課題，是如何辨識和解讀這些文物的性質、功能和文化內涵，並且追溯它們的製作技術和裝飾風格的淵源。

本研究嘗試通過對這些新出資料中帶有中亞和西亞裝飾題材和風格的器物和圖像進行分析，探討它們所反映的吐蕃文化區所吸收的薩珊、粟特乃至地中海地區的文化影響，揭示青藏高原北部地區在唐-吐蕃統治時期通過絲綢之路的文化交流狀況。

講者：仝濤博士（中國社會科學院考古研究所研究員）
仝濤，中國社會科學院考古研究所研究員，2008年獲得德國蒂賓根大學考古學博士學位。近年主要從事青藏高原「前吐蕃時期和吐蕃時期」的考古發掘與研究工作。2012-2015年主持西藏阿里故如甲木墓地和曲踏墓地的發掘，入選2014年度國家文物局「全國十大考古新發現」和中國社會科學院「六大考古新發現」。2018-2019年主持發掘青海烏蘭泉溝吐蕃時期壁畫墓，再次入選「全國十大考古新發現」和中國社會科學院「六大考古新發現」。主要代表作包括The Silk Roads of the Northern Tibetan Plateau during the Early Middle Age (from the Han to Tang Dynasty) as Reconstructed from Archaeological and Written Sources, Oxford: British Archaeological Reports, 2013;《青海都蘭熱水一號大墓的形制、年代及墓主人身份探討》（2012）、《歐亞視野內的喜馬拉雅黃金面具》（2015）、《西藏西部的絲綢與絲綢之路》（2017）等。

SUK SUK (叔 • 叔Twilight’s Kiss)

SUK SUK is a quiet portrayal of a gay relationship between two men in their twilight years. PAK, 70, a married taxi driver who refuses to retire meets HOI 65, a retired single father. Although both are secretly gay, they are proud of the families they have created through hard work and hardship over the years. HOI is a member of the Mature Tongzhi Society, a social group, which caters for gay men who are over 60. The group is planning to attend a public forum to request the government to create senior citizen homes dedicated exclusively for gay people. However, due to the fact that most men in the group are in the closet, there is no one who is willing to voice their opinions in the public forum. HOI supports the notion of a gay senior citizen home and considers speaking in the public forum. However when HOI begins to wonder whether his son WAN suspect he is gay, his attitude shifts. As PAK and HOI fall in love they contemplate a possible future together. SUK SUK studies the subtle day-to-day moments of the two men as they struggle between conventional morals and their personal desires.
