This talk provides a brief introduction to the language service provider Transing Translations, founded by two CUHK alumnae in 2017, and reveals the recent market trends in the translation and interpretation industry across different sectors. It is based on Ms. Zhang’s over 10-year exposure to the translation market and her close observation of the implementation of more than a thousand localisation-related projects. Full of practical illustrations and summaries, with a range of case studies, the talk presents the ability of professional translators and interpreters to help drive inclusivity and cross-cultural understanding by connecting audiences in their own languages. Following an in-depth exploration of Transing’s recent works and daily workflows, the talk also proposes a few tips offering perspectives on key dimensions of starting a career in the translation and interpretation industry.

Ms. Zhang is the Co-founder and Managing Director at Transing Translations Hong Kong. She runs a team providing on-site and remote conference interpreting services and written translation services for over 30 languages. Ms.. Zhang has created a network of specialist linguists that could be called upon according to specific needs. She is a strong entrepreneurship professional with an M.A. in Translation from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and an M.Sc. in E-Business from Newcastle University Business School.

Flags still ripple in twenty-first century winds to represent governments, communities, and ideas. Even so, the span of their cultural value has contracted over time. This talk presents research for a book co-authored by historian John Gagné at Sydney (Australia) and art historian Timothy McCall at Villanova (USA). Our work traces the rich history of flags in Renaissance Europe to interpret their function and meaning over centuries and across cultures. We explore the cultural, ideological, material, and artistic history of these complex and ubiquitous objects, examining flags not simply as heraldic cloth, but as numinous textiles akin to sacred relics whose significance was anchored to individual bodies, to communities, and to cosmic notions of faith, loyalty, and belonging. The meanings enacted by banners are hardly exhausted by the symbolic. Pushing beyond previous studies on Renaissance festive banners (gonfaloni), we spend time with armies, castles, and ships to show the multifarious deployment of banners in war tactics, conquest, and spoliation. Flags served as tools of social exchange: fragments of individuals or communities to be gifted, stolen, or displayed.

South Asians in Hong Kong experience discrimination, unequal access to education, employment, and public services, and barriers to participation in civic activities. The minoritisation they face has been brought into relief by the pandemic and by recent political upheaval. This renders established ideas of belonging in terms of cultural and linguistic homogeneity in need of challenge. Our research asks: (1) How does belonging emerge in and through narrative and photography? (2) How can we develop innovative approaches to researching belonging? and (3) How can our understandings of belonging be used to inform policies, practices and debate on social integration?

In the session we outline the process of stakeholder engagement that informs the aims of the project, describe the methodology, and discuss early data.

The book presents a multi-sited ethnographic study of the global development of the Taiwanese Buddhist order Fo Guang Shan. It explores the order’s modern Buddhist social engagements by examining three globally dispersed field sites: Los Angeles in the United States of America, Bronkhorstspruit in South Africa, and Yixing in the People’s Republic of China. The data collected at these field sites is embedded within the context of broader theoretical discussions on Buddhism, modernity, globalization, and the nation-state. By examining how one particular modern Buddhist religiosity that developed in a specific place moves into a global context, the book provides a fresh view of what constitutes both modern and contemporary Buddhism while also exploring the social, cultural, and religious fabrics that underlie the spatial configurations of globalization.

Jens Reinke is Assistant Professor and Assistant Chair at the Religious Studies Department and Director of the Institute for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism at University of the West. His research explores modern and contemporary Buddhism as practiced by ethnic Chinese all over the globe. Taking into consideration the dynamics of colonialism, globalization, and ethnic Chinese migration, Jens Reinke is particularly interested in exploring the manifold ways ethnic Chinese employ and adapt Buddhist ideas and practices to the contemporary era. Jens Reinke’s areas of expertise include Buddhism in sinophone societies worldwide, ethnic Chinese migration and diaspora, Buddhist border-crossings and mobilities, and Buddhism and global modernity.

 “I am interested in landscape and how culture can be revealed through it,” Ms. Conner said. “I am an obsessive collector and observer of the landscape. What initially sends me out into the unknown is often a photograph or painting that haunts me because of its absolute unfamiliarity.”

Being the University’s artist-in-residence and Visiting Scholar of the Faculty of Arts, what is her advice to our students? “It is good to have a trajectory, but it’s also important to be open for other things to happen. If you are distracted and are really interested in something else, you have to be unafraid to follow that other direction through.”

如來藏思想從其「本意」而言，竭力反駁的就是將如來藏與「梵我」混淆的說法。佛教經論中屢屢說及的如來藏、佛性與外道所說的「梵我」以及凡夫所執持的「實我」是不容混淆的。「如來藏」思想揭示了眾生皆具解脫成佛的根據和可能，而本覺思想則在此基礎上將其發展成為一種「樂觀的人性論」。一百年來認定如來藏是「實體」而取消如來藏經典的合法性的做法，是典型的「過度詮釋」。
